About the garden

Award: Gold Medal

The designer’s Indoor Plant Garden offered a serene escape—a tranquil urban oasis that brought nature indoors and created a seamless connection between interior design and plant life.

The space showcased contemporary 3D-printed planters made from plant-derived materials, featuring intricate tactile patterns that mesmerised and soothed. Styled as a multifunctional retreat, the room incorporated elements for relaxation, meditation, and creative pursuits.

A carefully curated selection of air-purifying indoor plants, from lush ferns to striking succulents, complemented the planters, creating a harmonious blend of form and function. The layout included comfortable seating, a small zen garden, and a dedicated space for yoga or meditation, all designed to encourage visitors to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature—and themselves.

The contemporary living space promoted relaxation and well-being through biophilic design principles, with minimalist signage and exterior plant displays hinting at the tranquillity within. Inspired by post-pandemic needs for mental health sanctuaries, the design merged modern digital craftsmanship with timeless nature.

Topical Themes & Environmental Responsibility

The garden promoted themes of serenity, mindfulness, and rejuvenation, using calming green foliage and uniquely patterned planters to create a visually soothing environment. Natural materials and earthy tones enhanced the sense of connection with nature, encouraging visitors to slow down, breathe deeply, and immerse themselves in the restorative power of indoor greenery.

The designer also aimed to inspire pen-to-paper creativity, offering a peaceful setting for reflection and expression.

Environmental responsibility was central to the design:

  • Eco-friendly 3D-printed planters made from biodegradable materials with minimal waste.
  • Air-purifying plants to improve indoor air quality.
  • Energy-efficient LED grow lights to support plant health.
  • Promotion of herb growing to encourage local food production.

Plant Selection & Sourcing

The garden featured approximately 45–65 plants, ranging from large statement specimens to small herbs and air plants. Key plants included:

  • Monstera deliciosa – a tropical statement plant symbolising escape.
  • Snake plant (Sansevieria) – low-maintenance and air-purifying.
  • Pothos – a lush trailing plant perfect for wall-mounted planters.
  • Peace lily – known for its calming presence and air-cleaning properties.
  • Herbs – basil, mint, and rosemary promoted healthy living through cooking.

Unsung plant heroes included:

  • Tillandsia (air plants) – soil-free and ideal for creative urban displays.
  • ZZ plant – resilient and perfect for low-light conditions.
  • Kitchen herbs – celebrated for their simplicity and everyday utility.

Plants were sourced from local, sustainable nurseries, with the main supplier being J Van Vliet in Derby, and additional support from Charlie at The Watered Garden, an independent business in Nottingham.

Plant lists were provided by the designer as a guide, based on the time of year, location, and client brief. Final plant selections depended on growing conditions and availability, and while updates were made where possible, accuracy could not be guaranteed.
