Hedgerow to Home

Designed and Built by: Jamie Langlands

About the garden

This garden celebrated the beauty and resilience of plants that grow naturally in wild spaces, showcasing how they can be thoughtfully incorporated into domestic gardens to create low-maintenance, eco-friendly environments that support local wildlife and biodiversity.

Adapted to Local Conditions

The garden featured plants commonly found in hedgerows, coastal areas, and other wild habitats, chosen for their natural adaptation to the local climate and soil. These species thrived with minimal intervention, reducing the need for watering, fertilising, or pest control. Their ability to withstand temperature extremes, rainfall variations, and poor soil made them ideal for sustainable gardening.

Low Maintenance & High Impact

Wild plants evolved to be resilient and self-sufficient. Hedgerow species were drought-tolerant and disease-resistant, while coastal plants handled salt spray and sandy soils with ease. Once established, these plants required little pruning or upkeep, making them perfect for gardeners seeking low-effort, high-reward greenery.

Supporting Local Ecosystems

By using native plants, the garden supported pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths, and provided shelter and food for birds, small mammals, and insects. This helped build a resilient ecosystem, contributing to the health of local wildlife populations and promoting biodiversity.

Resilience to Climate Change

The garden demonstrated how wild plants—adapted to harsh and fluctuating environments—could help future-proof gardens against climate challenges. Coastal species tolerated wind and salt, while hedgerow plants withstood drought and flooding. Their inclusion ensured the garden remained robust and beautiful, even in the face of extreme weather events.
